Cohesion Foundation supports Burn Centers Golf Outing

September 22, 2022

Cohesion supports Burn Centers Golf Outing benefiting The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and Nationwide Children's Hospital Burn Units

The Central Ohio Chapter of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers and the Columbus Firefighters Foundation proudly presents the 33rd Annual Burn Center Golf Outing on September 26, 2022. The charity golf event takes place annually at the end of September, which coincides with celebrating and honoring the 100th Anniversary of Fire Prevention Week. This year’s event will be enhanced through the participation of current OSU student-athletes who have been generously provided to support the event by Cohesion Foundation and their purpose-driven NIL initiatives.

The newly founded Cohesion Foundation is making the most out of the NIL opportunities by connecting Ohio State student-athletes to local causes. These good deeds will bring a new element to what has traditionally been a very successful golf outing benefiting The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and Nationwide Children's Hospital Burn Units.

Since 1998, the Society of Fire Protection Engineers and its members have generously contributed to the Burn Centers. These funds have allowed The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and Nationwide Children's Hospital Burn Units to continue to be actively involved in providing education on burn prevention and fire safety both to the community and students on campus, as well as helping patients obtain special items or assistance.

Participating in the event on behalf of “Team Cohesion” will be OSU Women’s Golf Team members, Lauren Peter and Faith Choi, who are proud to attend the event to support the cause and raise awareness for the Burn Centers. Golfers will enjoy a great day of golf at the beautiful Medallion Golf Club in Westerville, Ohio.

Funds raised from the event are allocated to enhance education and prevention programs, as well as patient care.

The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center Burn Center:

The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center’s Burn Center provides specialized care for patients with multiple types of thermal and soft tissue injuries. In the past year we have cared for 400 inpatient burn patients, 2,200 outpatient clinic visits. We have also performed 120 laser treatments for burn survivors to help reduce scarring, pain, itching and nerve pain.

The monies raised by the SFPE Golf Outing have benefited our patients and staff in the following ways:

  • Financially assisting with the purchase of a 3D printer to create splits and therapy devices that can be customized for each patient to use during their recovery.
  • Assisting with burn compression garments for patients who do not have the resources to pay for these without our assistance. Compression garments help lessen the appearance and impact of the scars after recovery.
  • Providing training for our SOAR (Survivors Offering Assistance in Recovery) program and supporting our monthly survivor group outings We are also working on having the inpatients involved with the survivors so they can ask questions while still in the hospital, It helps provide the inpatients with the sense of hope seeing survivors thrive after their injuries.
  • Sponsoring trainee travel to the American Burn Association meeting in order to share novel research into burns and recovery. We at the Burn Center are so appreciative for the ongoing generosity of SFPE and those that support the annual Golf Outing to improve the lives of our burn survivors on a daily basis.

Nationwide Children's Hospital Burn Unit:

The Burn Program at Nationwide Children’s Hospital is an all-inclusive program dedicated to providing best outcomes to pediatric burn patients. As one of the select programs verified by the American Burn Association and American College of Surgeons, burn patients and their families receive the expertise and support of a comprehensive, multidisciplinary team from arrival to the hospital often into adulthood. The goal of the program is to provide optimal care to assure the best possible physical, psychological and social outcomes that promote a return to a healthy and active life.

Nationwide Children’s Hospital Burn Center team provides care to children with all types of burns, from thermal injuries team provides care to cutaneous conditions, delivering collaborative burn treatment throughout the patient care continuum to optimize outcomes. Skilled doctors, nurses, child life specialists, dietitians, occupational therapists, physical therapists, social workers, psychologists, therapeutic recreation specialists, massage therapists and case managers participate to assure comprehensive individualized patient care.

Additionally, to promote an environment of safety dedicated burn nurses deliver a nationally established burn prevention program to school age children throughout the district. The burn program staff also provides burn education to the academic and medical community to build collaboration and foster knowledge of pediatric burn care.

This annual golf outing will raise money for the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Burn Center program to provide state of the art care and support for the families they serve and help fund programs that foster return to a healthy active life for both the burn survivor and their families:

  • Healthy Healing Burn Camp welcomes burn survivors (and others with conditions similar to burn injuries) and their families who have been treated in the Burn Center at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, to come together to share their unique experiences. Families are supported by a team of Nationwide Children’s staff members who have designed a program that focuses on community building, strengthening family bonds, giving and receiving support and learning new ways to thrive. Funding will help cover the costs of this camp.
  • Phoenix World Burn Congress is one of the largest gatherings for the burn community. Its goal is to connect those in the burn community with support, resources, and each other to help aide in the journey of recovery from a burn injury. Funding will sponsor staff and patient families to attend this event.
